Demo accounts: how to use one without fooling yourself

Every broker offers a free demo with virtual balance. Getting one isn't the problem — using it in a way that actually prepares you for real money is.

The 3 mistakes that make a demo useless

  • Trading unrealistic amounts. If your real bankroll will be $100, test with $100 virtual — not $10,000. Proportional stakes completely change your emotional reaction and how the stop behaves.
  • Testing only on OTC. On weekends only OTC exists, and it is statistically random. Good results there mean nothing. Test during market hours, on real pairs.
  • Testing for too few days. A good week happens by luck even with a bad strategy. Our minimum bar is 150 signals before concluding anything.

Running the bot on demo

In the IaTraderPro panel set conta = demo and let it run for several days inside the right hour windows. The panel logs every trade, so you end up with real statistics instead of impressions. That's how we validate everything we publish.

When to switch to real? When you have 150+ demo trades during market hours, a consistently positive result, and you understand why the strategy works. If you can't clear that bar, the problem isn't the demo — it's the strategy.

FAQ

Is the demo account really free?
Yes, on all the brokers listed. No deposit required and the virtual balance can be refilled.

Does demo behave like real money?
Almost: the price feed is the same, but demo has no execution slippage and none of your real emotion. That's why demo results tend to look slightly better.

How long should I stay on demo?
Until you have at least 150 trades on the real market (not OTC) with a consistent result. That usually takes weeks, not days.
