Is Quotex legal in India? The honest answer
Most pages answering this question are affiliate sites that get paid when you deposit. We get paid nothing, so here is what the regulators actually say — and what you can do legally instead.
Why the RBI Alert List matters
The Reserve Bank of India publishes an Alert List of entities that are neither authorised to deal in foreign exchange under FEMA nor authorised to operate electronic trading platforms for forex transactions. Quotex has been on that list since the 2022 additions and remains there. Being on it means: no Indian regulator supervises the platform, no local dispute resolution, and remitting funds to it sits outside the permitted framework.
And SEBI?
The Securities and Exchange Board of India has never licensed a binary options platform. In India, fixed-time "up or down" products are not treated as a regulated financial instrument — they sit closer to wagering than to derivatives. If a website tells you Quotex is "SEBI approved", it is simply false; you can check the SEBI register yourself.
Tax: the 30% nobody mentions
Even setting legality aside, the tax treatment surprises most people:
| Item | How it works | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | Flat 30% on net winnings (Section 115BBJ) | No slab benefit, no basic exemption |
| TDS | 30% at withdrawal (Section 194BA) | Indian platforms withhold it; foreign ones do not |
| Losses | Cannot be set off or carried forward | You are taxed on winnings, not on net trading results |
| Your duty | Self-report in the ITR | With a foreign platform, the entire compliance burden is yours |
Talk to a chartered accountant before assuming anything — the exact head under which binary options income falls can be argued, and getting it wrong is expensive.
What IS legal in India
- SEBI-registered brokers — check the registration number on the SEBI website before opening any account.
- Index and stock options on NSE/BSE — real, regulated options with transparent pricing, an exchange counterparty and legal recourse. If you like options, this is the legitimate version of what you were looking for.
- Demo accounts and paper trading — always legal, and where every strategy should start anyway.
Where our free bot fits in — honestly
Our IaTraderPro Bot is free and open source. For a user in India we recommend it as a learning and research tool: run it on a demo account, read the Python code, study the 13 strategies, reproduce our backtests. That is legal, costs nothing and teaches you more than any paid course.
What we will not do is publish a "how to deposit with UPI on Quotex" guide. Plenty of affiliate sites will — they earn a commission when you deposit. We earn nothing either way, which is exactly why we can tell you the boring truth.

FAQ
Is Quotex legal in India?
No — Quotex is not authorised in India. It appears on the RBI's Alert List of entities not authorised to deal in forex under FEMA, and it holds no SEBI licence. Indian residents who deposit with it are outside the legal framework and have no local protection.
Is Quotex banned in India?
There is no criminal ban on the app itself, but it is unauthorised: it is on the RBI Alert List and SEBI has never licensed binary options in India. 'Not explicitly banned' is not the same as legal.
Can I be penalised for trading on Quotex from India?
Remitting money to an unauthorised forex platform can breach FEMA, which carries monetary penalties. Enforcement against individual retail users has been rare, but the legal exposure is real.
How are these gains taxed in India?
Winnings from online games are taxed at a flat 30% under Section 115BBJ, with 30% TDS under Section 194BA. Foreign platforms do not withhold it, so the reporting obligation falls entirely on you. Consult a CA — the exact classification of binary options income can vary.
What is legal for trading in India?
Trading through SEBI-registered brokers: equities, and index/stock derivatives (options and futures) on NSE and BSE. These are genuine, regulated options markets with legal recourse.
Can I still use your bot in India?
Yes — on a demo account, for learning, backtesting and studying the open-source Python code. That is legal and risk-free. We do not encourage Indian residents to deposit real money into unauthorised platforms.
